Freewheel for the Homeless
January 8, 2008

CLEARWATER – A program offering homeless adults and children a flexible solution to meet their transportation needs and reduce barriers to work while promoting healthy activity has been developed at the Homeless Emergency Project, Inc. (HEP) in Clearwater.

“Freewheel” a not-for-profit bike shop and distribution program, operated by and located on the HEP campus, will serve those with transportation issues in need in Pinellas County. The program will provide the freedom of personal transportation to homeless adults and children with recycle/refurbish donations of bikes and bike components.

An important goal of the Freewheel program will be to educate consumers on bike repair and maintenance and help consumers understand rules of the road. Each qualified participant will receive a bike registered with the National Bike Registry (NBR), Steel U-Lock, light set for night riding commuter, and helmet that meets the CPSC Impact Standard.

Donations of new and used bikes and parts are being solicited for the program. We accept all makes, models, types and conditions of bicycles.

HEP needs bikes! We will put your old bike to good use!
